Ghilli

Language: TAMIL
Director: Dharani
Producer: A.M Ratnam
Cast: Vijay, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Vinod
Music: Vidhyasagar
Rating: 6/10

Review [by NowRunning] :

Gilli, story wise, is neither fresh popcorn nor spicy samosa found in theaters.. but the screenplay and overall treatment is as fresh and appetizing as full meals after a long day. You better believe it, if you are a Masala film or Vijay fan, you will lap this up in a jiffy.

What brings Vijay (Saravana Velu, aka Ghilli), a kabbadi pro, and Trisha (Dhanalakshmi), a hapless lass caught between her downtrodden family and a vile, tempestuous and absolutely obsessed Prakashraj (Muthupandi) together forms the crux of the story. But "Ghilli" is purely a visual treat from start to finish, what with car/van chases, running, swimming, jumping, pulling, pushing and just about any other '-ings' you can do in the name of stunt sequences. Director Dharani, whose previous outings include "Dhill" and "Dhool," both Vikram starrers, has grasped the details of the Telugu original story and screenplay of "Okkadu" and fashioned a Tamil remake that showcases Vijay's talents and builds his 'star' image even further. No wonder Dharani is considered such hot property in Kodambakkam today.

Vijay's character here is more down to earth and one that digests the good and bad easily. He does his comic shtick (if it can be called that!) by fooling his father, Ashish Vidyarthi, the strict police officer dad, his vulnerably naive mother, Janaki Sabesh, and a sharp, yet helpless, sister, Baby Jennifer. He dances, prances and delights his street friends with kabbadi and his "Gilli" Ghaana song. He focuses his sharp eyes and touches his index finger and thumb and rolls them in anticipation of oppositon. He looks (like a million bucks) perfect in the role of Saravana Velu. Don't let the trailer fool you, Vijay has done his homework this time. It's not an image changing role, but a strong image boosting one and he does his share to make it a reality.

Rakki Rajesh's stunt work is almost impeccable here and Gopinath's crisp cinematography captures these scenes very realistically. Amongst the technicians, V.T.Vijayan's editing responsibilities need to be highlighted, as he makes sure that the film doesn't sag too much. Art and Set Director Maniraj's quality of work is questionable though. The beautiful terrace and the adjoining lighthouse are thoughtful structures, but any average joe could spot the presence of a set here. The awkward special effects, especially where Vijay jumps from one building to another, the fireflies in the "Sha la la" Trisha solo song, lacked professionalism, considering a lot of "Ghilli's" budget was spent on producing a technically superior film. Trisha has nothing much to do except run, hide, cry, smile, sing and dance (mostly what heroines have been doing effectively since the birth of cinema! :-). Unfortunately, her skin and bones look also leaves a lot to be desired. The much hyped Vinodraj (Actor Vikram's father in real life) has nothing much to do either. The other real hero, besides Vijay, has to be Prakashraj. It's no surprise that he wins National Awards at the blink of an eye every year. Though he is often accused of hamming and overacting, he does it with class! Every time he yells out "Chellam," the chills invariably goes down your spine (and Trisha's too!). His "I LOVE YOU" declaration to Trisha is one of the brightest moments in acting by a villain in recent time. Kudos Raj!..

So, grab some popcorn, a good friend or relative (a Vijay fan would be the icing on the cake!), sit back, relax and watch "Ghilli" comfortably at your local theater. Oh, by the way, leave your noodle at home.. you don't have any use for it as logic is not part of the "Ghilli" equation! :-)

Thiruda Thirudi

Thiruda Thirudi - Review

"Thiruda Thirudi" ... well-worked out formula.

ARMED WITH a well-worked out success formula, new director Subramaniam Siva confidently enters the fray in Indian Theatre Production's "Thiruda Thirudi". He compensates for his flimsy storyline with screenplay that moves at full speed till the first half, sagging slightly only in the second, and dialogue that's completely in with the trend with all kinds of weird coinage typical of today's youth. Added to all these, is a young hero who enjoys the Midas' touch at the moment ... what more could a producer ask for?

Vasu (Dhanush) belongs to a middle class family that lives in Tiruchi. More or less a wastrel, who lags behind academically, he spends most of his time with fellows of his own ilk. His elder brother Ganesh (Krishna) is made of better stuff. Though fun-loving like his brother he is responsible and studious. Vasu's chance meeting with Viji (Chaya Singh), leads him into such a mess that he decides to move away to Chennai. Viji happens to follow him there, but only in the last scene does the inevitable happen.

Whether his moves are carefully planned or whether he's been plain lucky, for the third time in succession Dhanush has chosen a character that is bound to pay rich dividends. In a light role that provides enjoyable comic streaks, very different from the one he portrayed in "Kadhal Kondain", Dhanush once again makes an impression. He is another actor who has proved that if time and talent are on your side, height, weight and looks hardly matter. His lanky physique and a visage that has no marked features, remind you of action heroes — the Bruce Lee kind, especially in the stunt sequences.

Chaya Singh, the Mills and Boon heroine who is at loggerheads with the hero till the end, fills the bill. Suki, another new face, who dotes on Vasu, is a foil for her. The latter has to either lose weight or wear clothes that suit her. Viewers cannot have too many heroines of the Kiran kind thrust on them. A very commendable portrayal from Manicka Vinayagam, the singer who makes a debut as an actor in "Thiruda ... " He plays the calm and dignified dad of Vasu. Krishna, who played the young man fleeing abroad after a forced marriage, in "Five Star", puts up a fairly neat show in "Thiruda ... ".

Melody is a major casualty in Dhina's music. The deafening noise could transport the youth to frenetic levels but they have very little to do with sounds of music. The lyrics of the "Vandarkuzhali ... " number is unpalatable, and that's putting it mildly. Unnatural sequences, crudeness and double entendres there are ... but to an excusable extent.

"Thiruda Thirudi" should do for its makers, what their earlier production "King" couldn't. But surely they could have thought of a better title for their slick package.

Punnagai Poove

Cast - Nandha , Rekha , Kaveri , M.S.Viswanathan , Vadivelu , Senthil
Music - Yuvan Shankar Raja
Direction - Saba Kailash
Review:

Almost every other movie being released these days seems to feature new faces. The good news is that the screening process for the leads seems to be getting tighter since the actors are a lot more presentable than before. The bad news is that the movies themselves offer nothing new or fresh. Punnagai Poove offers a traditional love triangle involving a man and two women and resolves it in the usual fashion.
Meera(Rekha) and Nitya(Kaveri) are best friends but with radically opposite views on love - Meera feels love is inescapabale and essential while Nitya feels that wedding the boy of her parents' choice is all there is to love. True to her word, Nitya is all set to wed her uncle's son Shakti. Meera begins to tease Venkat(Nandha), a new arrival in their apartment complex, over the phone and the teasing gradually turns into love. But when Venkat goes to Meera's house to see her, circumstances lead him to think that it was Nitya whose voice he has heard over the phone.
The whole movie rests on a really shaky foundation which is the fact that Nitya does not come right out and tell Nandha that she is not the girl he has been talking to on the phone. While her silence at their first meeting is understandable considering her position, her inability to tell him the truth when he makes a second trip to her house is not realistic. Her subsequent actions result in her character taking a big hit since she is essentially cheating on her lover, her best friend and the man who has been waiting to marry her!
But the above fact is the weakest link in an otherwise strong chain. The director manages to make the rest of the movie entertaining, as long as one is willing to accept Kaveri's silence and the ethical underpinnings of her character. The phone conversations between Nandha and Rekha are jolly and the feelings they develop for each other are understandable. Not as much time is spent on the relation between Nandha and his grandparents but the scene where he reveals what happened during his first meeting with Kaveri makes us wish that more time had been spent on their relationship. Even sequences which don't really have a bearing on the main story, like the wedding at the apartment complex, has some strong dialogs that make some good points.
It is to the director's credit that he has moved the story along well inspite of our reservations about Kaveri's actions. Enough situations and close calls are created for the truth to come out and all are sidestepped in believable fashion. The movie also takes a couple of unexpected turns that maintain our interest upto the end. But the ending itself is quite lame.
Nandha is probably the most promising among the slew of new heroes we have seen recently. He is handsome, acts well, fights well and has a good physique. Dancing seems to be his sore point. Rekha has a very expressive face and puts it to good use during her phone conversations with Nandha. Kaveri looks surprisingly good in modern clothes and hairdo and convincingly portrays a girl not really comfortable with her own actions. Sarika looks old and jaded in a single song appearance. Yuvan Shankar Raja has some good tunes but could have avoided making an appearance in one of the song sequences. lame.

Kadhal Sadugudu

Cast: Vikram, PriyankaTrivedi, Raghuvaran, Rekha, MN.Nambiar, Nalini
Music: Deva
Director:Durai

Suresh (Vikram) is a poor orphan who goes with his best friend's family to Thathamangalam, a remote village where rich farmers live in 'haveli' type houses. Suresh meets a rich landlord Chidambaram (Prakashraj) who starts hating him after a couple of accidental encounters for no fault of his. Suresh bumps into Kausalya (Priyanka Trivedi), Chidambaram's daughter and it is love for him at the fist sight. When Chidambaram realises that Suresh and Kausalya are in love with each other, he threatens to commit suicide. Suresh by then has won the hearts of Kausalya's grandparents including the lovable 'thatha' (M.N.Nambiar) and other relatives. How Chidambaram realises that he was mistaken about Suresh and how he unites the lovers is the climax.

The film moves in bits and pieces, with details overlooked. The director has not used an actor with caliber such as Vikram properly and the dominant character of Prakashraj subdues the role he plays. Prakashraj makes the most of the scenes. Priyanka though looks sensual doesn't seem to have been dressed up well. Vivek as U.S returned Super Subbu and Parvai Muniamma of Dhool fame comes as his 'paatti' to create a separate comedy track in the film. Though Vivek's attempt at creating social awareness must be appreciated, the jokes through which he tries them doesn't seem to take off well. The lusty dance movements of Alphonsa and Rani (of O'Podu fame) are disgusting. To sum-up, a disappointing movie from the director of Mugavari!!

Youth

Movie Name: Youth
Cast: Vijay , Sandhya , Yugendran , Vivek , Manivannan , Haneefa
Music: Mani Sharma
Direction: Vinvent Selva
Rating: 2.5
Review By: Balaji B

Ever since the change of image in Poove Unakkaaga, Vijay has been building himself up as the poster boy for love in Tamil cinema. Many of his movies since the blockbuster hit Kaadhalukku Mariyaadhai have cast him in variations of the same role - the sacrificing youngster who is willing to give up love for something more important. But Youth gives him a role that is the opposite - he is not ready to give up love even after learning that the girl doesn't love him and is going to be married to someone else. The positive, stronger character works better but the movie, which starts off very well, loses steam in the second half with cliched developments.

Shiva(Vijay) is dumped at his own wedding by his cousin, who feels that his profession of a cook is too lowly for her. But as with everything else in life, he takes it lightly, moving to Chennai with the girl's brother. He falls in love with Sandhya(Sandhya), who moves freely with him, giving him hope that she too reciprocates his affections. But Shiva is in for a rude shock when she announces her engagement to computer engineer Pratap(Yugendran) at a party. Sandhya is even more shocked when she hears an "I love you" from Shiva instead of the congratulatory wishes she had been expecting. Worse, he is not willing to forgo his love inspite of her entreaties.

Inspite of the hackneyed theme of one-sided love, director Vincent Selva(who has previously worked with Vijay in Priyamudan) manages to keep things at an enjoyable level for quite some time. Though Vijay's wholehearted love and assumption of the same inspite of no signs from Sandhya make it clear that a twist is coming, we are able to wholeheartedly immerse ourselves in his romance because of the way it is handled. The entire sequence where Vijay makes things 'happen' for Sandhya is delightful and the set up, especially the way he gets the bike, is very clever. The director also makes the misunderstanding believable without being too cinematic. Since Sandhya's behavior towards Vijay is not artificial and his assumption of her love is understandable, we are not irritated by either of them.

Right at the point where everything is in place for Vijay to sacrifice his love and pine for Sandhya silently, the "I love you" from him comes as a pleasant surprise. With no knowledge about her fiance Yugendran and keeping in mind Vijay's penchant for sacrifices and sad endings(the recent Shah Jahan being a case in point), there is some suspense about the route the movie will take. The director manages to successfully maintain this suspense for quite a while too. Vijay's casual insistence on loving Sandhya and her attempts to change his way of thinking keep things interesting.

But the moment the real character of Yugendran is revealed, all the interest is drained out of the movie. Unlike Minnale, Yugendran proves himself to be quite dislikeable and makes it quite obvious who Sandhya is going to be united with in the end. In this respect, Youth apes Kaadhal Mannan, another movie where the heroine is pursued by the hero after her engagement. Even the reappearance of Vijay's cousin who dumped him before adds nothing of interest to the story apart from boosting Vijay's image even more. But the director scores some points in the end by averting an unwanted fight and solving things interestingly.

Vijay enjoys himself in the role, his usual casual performance aiding his character this time. His repeated utterance of a certain phrase (a la Rajnikanth) and the periodic monologues about love may cheer his fans but leave us quite unshaken. Sandhya looks OK but Simran steals her thunder with her special appearance. Her exuberant dance with Vijay for the Aal Thotta Bhoopathi... song sequence is definitely one of the highlights of the movie. Vivek is on hand to cheer us up whenever the movie lags though Hanifa, as the ever-drinking uncle of Sandhya, raises as many laughs as Vivek. Yugendran is adequate. Mani Sharma disappoints after the great soundtrack in Shah Jahan. Most songs are of the dappanguthu variety with inane lyrics while the single melodious track Sakhiye Sakhiye... is a copy of a popular Hindi tune from a few years back.

Thavasi

Movie Name: Thavasi
Cast: Vijayakanth , Soundarya , Jayasudha , Pratyuksha , Nasser , Sriman , Vadivelu
Music: Vidyasagar
Direction: Udayashankar

After a string of movies(which featured increased lack of logic and dimishing box-office returns with each new entry) where he played first cops and then supercops, Vijayakanth turns to his second most popular role - that of the gold-hearted, virtuous village elder who goes through a crisis - in Thavasi. While the movie adds nothing new to the story of the disgraced father, his obedient son and the father's ultimate salvation(infact movies like Sooryavamsam handled it better), the screenplay manages to hold our interest with some interesting conflicts and situations.

Thavasi(Vijayakanth) is the village elder, whose son Bhoopathy(Vijayakanth) is doing agriculture research. Sankarapandi(Nasser) has earned Thavasi's ire by marrying and then abandoning his sister and his request to have his daughter Nandhini(Pratyuksha) married to Bhoopathy is also denied. Instead Thavasi decides to get Bhoopathy married to Priyadarshini(Soundarya). When the temple jewels are stolen, Thavasi charges Thangarasu(Sriman) with the theft and a heartbroken Thangarasu commits suicide. But it is later revealed that he was infact innocent. Egged on by Sankarapandi, Thangarasu's mother accuses Thavasi of being responsible for her son's death and to make amends for his false charge, Thavasi sends Bhoopathy to her house to replace Thangarasu.

Romance typically takes a backseat in Vijayakanth movies(the seat was even further back in his recent cop movies!) but it is the interaction between Vijayakanth and Soundarya that makes the initial portions enjoyable here. Soundarya's confusion after Vadivelu introduces himself as her suitor and Vijayakanth's helplessness after seeing the servant maid placed there by Soundarya are funny and cute. With this romance and the fights, the older Vijayakanth lurks only in the background during these portions. But Vijayakanth's request to the woman to stop the wedding since she doesn't look good could've been avoided. It is hurtful and doesn't help his image.

Vijayakanth spotting Sriman in the temple is the first sign of an impending crisis and we are not disappointed. Sriman's suicide makes things interesting since the older Vijayakanth has apparently committed a huge mistake and the punishment he metes out - of sending his son to 'replace' the dead son - is quite new. His mistake and the guilt he feels because of that are what make the story enjoyable from that point. But instead of keeping things interesting, the director chooses to wrap things up a little too cleanly by way of a lame and predictable climax that helps him come out looking spotless. But the climactic fight itself at the marriage hall is well choreographed and executed.

Vijayakanth has quite a few insults heaped on him by Ponnambalam as he is treated as a servant at Sriman's house. But since we know that Ponnambalam will get his comeuppance soon enough, these portions are enjoyable because of the anticipation. The other problems, like the dowry problems of the elder sister and the attempted rape of the younger sister by Ponnambalam, at the household that Vijayakanth helps solve are also passable even if simplistic and help keep the story moving. There are some sentiments between Vijayakanth and Jayasudha but these are not overdone.

Vijayakanth doesn't do much to differentiate between his two roles with respect to gestures or mannerisms and so its just the make-up that does the job. The special effects director too has little to do with the two roles rarely appearing in the same frame. Soundarya looks cute while Jayasudha, appearing in Tamil after a long time, is adequate as the dutiful wife and affectionate mother. Acting honors go to Nasser who manages to jazz up another routine villainous role with a nice smirk while taunting Vijayakanth. Nasser enjoys himself in the scene where he confronts Vijayakanth at the marriage hall. Vadivelu's individual encounters with the mad man are loud and unfunny but he is tolerable when paired with Vijayakanth. Pratyuksha is on hand for a single duet. Vidyasagar has had some hit soundtracks recently but Thavasi is definitely not going to be added to the list.
